Australian Pilot

Dr Ian Jackson
Specialist Anaesthetist, Editor IAAS Ambulatory Surgery Journal and President of IAAS Scientific Committee
Qualified Aberdeen 1981. Appointed Consultant Anaesthetist in York (1989). Led development of day surgery developing a new 6 theatre day surgery unit. Elected to the Council of the British Association of Day Surgery in 1994 and served as Honorary Treasurer, Editor of the Journal of One-Day Surgery and then as President. He was President of the International Association for Ambulatory Surgery in 2013 and is now Editor of their journal Ambulatory Surgery and President of their Scientific Committee. His interests include the use of IT in medicine and he has spent the last decade supporting the development and safe implementation of IT across several hospitals.
Prof. Doug McWhinnie

Doug McWhinnie graduated from Glasgow University Medical School in 1977 and was appointed Clinical Lecturer in Surgery and Surgical Tutor at Oxford University in 1983. While completing his research MD with Honours in the immunology of Renal Transplant rejection, he developed an interest in day surgery through day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic inguinal hernia rapair. He was appointed Consultant general and Vascular Surgeon in Milton Keynes in 1993 and in 1997 opened the first dedicated 23 hour unit in the UK to complement an expanding day unit. Doug was an executive member of the commissioning group which , in 2005,opened the Milton Keynes Ambulatory Treatment Centre successfully co-locating preassessment, day surgery and 23 hour surgery in the same building. In 1998, he became a council member of the British Association of Day Surgery, and having held a number of executive positions, was appointed President of the Association in 2008. After joining the General Assembly of IAAS in 2010, he was appointed Surgical Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ambulatory Surgery the following year and to the Executive Council in 2013. Doug has lectured widely and published extensively on ambulatory surgery. He co-authored the Oxford Handbook of Day Case Surgery, and has contributed to several standard surgical textbooks on day surgery. His main interest relates to patient safety and the design of ambulatory pathways. In addition to his work in ambulatory surgery, Doug is Professor and Director of Clinical Studies for the new independent University of Buckingham Medical School, with the first intake of students in January 2015
Dr James Bradley
Anaesthetist
Dr James Bradley qualified from University of Queensland in 1973, obtaining his Fellowship in Anaesthesia in 1980, and training in Brisbane, Durban and Toronto. He was appointed as a full-time Specialist Anaesthetist to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in 1982, and has maintained his commitment to the PAH since, initially full-time, and then part-time as a Visiting Medical Officer. His association with “day surgery” anaesthesia goes back to the initial projects at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Wesley Hospital, and progressively over time, to a number of Day Hospitals in the Brisbane area. He is a past-President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, currently its Specialty Affairs Adviser, and he has a broad interest in the delivery of healthcare.

Nick is responsible for developing Medibank’s strategy for funding healthcare, designing and piloting funding models to support innovation in healthcare delivery and analysis of its healthcare data. Nick has over 14 years’ experience working in healthcare strategy and consulting. Prior to joining Medibank, Nick worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Melbourne and London - where he consulted to the National Health Service on healthcare funding. A/Prof. Philip Truskett AM
General Surgeon, Senior Staff Specialist
A/Prof Philip Truskett AM is a General Surgeon with an interest in Upper GI and HPB Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, where he is a senior staff specialist. A/Prof Truskett was appointed as Chairperson of Day Hospitals Australia in March 2019 and has taken an active role in both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and General Surgeons Australia. He is a past President of General Surgeons Australia. As a College Councillor he has served on many College committees. He was the Chair of the Board of Surgical Education and Training and then served as Censor in Chief. He is the immediate past President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is the current Chair of the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC). He is a proud patron of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association and a committed advocate for equity of access for indigenous Australians to medical schools and specialty training.
