Dr. Ishita Barua is a medical doctor with a PhD in artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine from the University of Oslo. She is Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer at Livv Health.
Dr. Barua is an award-winning AI researcher and was a Fulbright scholar at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and she has previously served as the Lead AI in Healthcare at Deloitte. Prior to this Dr. Barua worked as a resident in Gastroenterology, specializing in colorectal cancer screening with AI-enhanced colonoscopy.
Recognized as one of Norway’s 50 most influential women in technology, Dr. Barua has also made her mark as an author, publishing her book “Artificial Intelligence Saves Lives” last year. She also serves as deputy member of The Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board appointed by the Norwegian government and as a board member of The Norwegian Council of Digital Ethics.
Malcolm Dix is a Bullshift Facilitator, Executive Coach, Counsellor, Accredited PRINT Practitioner and recovering StandUp Comedian with over 20 years of experience presenting to diverse audiences across Australia.
Over the years, Malcolm has worked with almost every industry imaginable – from Health, Community Services, Education and Finance to Government Departments, Local Councils and numerous small to medium businesses and global organistations.

Dr Alan D. Thompson is a world expert in artificial intelligence (AI), specializing in the augmentation of human intelligence, and advancing the evolution of ‘integrated AI’.
Alan provides AI consulting and advisory to intergovernmental organizations including member states of the European Union, the Commonwealth, and the World Trade Organization. Alan’s applied AI research and visualizations are featured across major international media, including citations in the University of Oxford’s debate on AI Ethics in December 2021. His 2021-2022 experiments with Leta AI and Aurora AI have been viewed over 1.5 million times.
Prior to his work in AI, Alan was a major contributor to human intelligence research and practice. As chairman for Mensa International’s gifted families committee, Alan served two consecutive terms sharing best practice among 54 countries, and his work on gifted education was referenced in the Department of Education’s High Potential policy.
Alan’s best-selling book, Bright, was made available to families at Elon Musk’s gifted school. A copy of the book will be sent to the moon aboard the Peregrine lunar lander in 2022.

Alan completed his Bachelor of Science (Computer Science, AI, and Psychology) at Edith Cowan University, 2004; studied Gifted Education at Flinders University, 2017; became a Fellow of the Institute of Coaching affiliated with Harvard Medical School, 2017; and received his doctorate from Emerson, 2021. Alan’s dissertation was adapted into a book featuring Dr Rupert Sheldrake, Connected: Intuition and Resonance in Smart People.
Helen Bucknell is a Quality and Infection Prevention and Control Consultant who works across a broad range of health care settings. This includes day hospitals, public and private acute care hospitals, ambulatory and community care services across Australia.
Helen is a Registered Nurse who has worked in clinical risk and infection prevention and control for more than twenty years in both the public and private health care sectors. Prior to focusing on these specialty areas, she has worked in a variety of clinical roles in hospitals and the community.
Helen is a Credentialed Infection Prevention and Control Professional with the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control and a fellow of the Australasian Association for Quality in Health Care. She has also completed her training as a National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards Assessor.
Helen’s particular areas of interest include patient and Healthcare Worker safety education, working with multi-disciplinary teams and mentoring new and emerging day hospital managers. She assists organisations with clinical governance requirements to meet state and national regulatory requirements and to continuously improve care delivery.
Alex has been involved in Day Hospital Management both in Australia and Overseas. As the Chief Financial Officer he was responsible for the financial management of over 100 Day Hospitals in the Group.
With over 30 years of industry experience, Alex has a demonstrated history of growing and developing SME’s, local and multinational companies.
A strong Finance, Strategic and Commercial emphasis, Alex provides strong leadership and commercial acumen in all business environments.
Alex holds an MBA from Australian Graduate School of Management (UNSW/USYD), is a Fellow Certified Practising Accountant (FCPA) and is a member of the NSW Divisional Council for CPA Australia.
Joshua is the Managing Director of Tecnic Group an IT Managed Services consultancy which he founded in 2014.
Joshua’s journey began as a Level 1 Help Desk Administrator at 17. He progressed through roles up to System Architect & Software Engineer. Throughout his career, Joshua consistently noticed opportunities for improving IT solution delivery in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Holding a Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Social Science, Tim’s prior professional experience includes serving as the National Head of Legal Services at an international boutique law firm that specialised in employment law and industrial relations. As this was a uniquely structured membership-based law firm, Tim understands the importance of delivering value for members.
With a strong belief in the unique role of day hospitals as vital to the sustainability of the Australian healthcare system, Tim advocates for collaborative efforts with overnight facilities and the broader public health sector to enhance clinical outcomes.
Tim is also the TAS Member Director on the Board of Directors of Day Hospitals Australia.
A/Prof. Philip Truskett AM is a General Surgeon with an interest in Upper GI and HPB Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, where he is a senior staff specialist.
A/Prof. Truskett was appointed as Chairperson of Day Hospitals Australia in March 2019 and has taken an active role in both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and General Surgeons Australia. He is a past President of General Surgeons Australia. As a College Councillor he has served on many College committees. He was the Chair of the Board of Surgical Education and Training and then served as Censor in Chief. He is the immediate past President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is the current Chair of the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC).
He is a proud patron of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association and a committed advocate for equity of access for indigenous Australians to medical schools and specialty training.
Nick is a senior executive with over 17 years’ experience working in the healthcare industry and professional services. Currently Senior Executive Healthcare Funding and Policy at Medibank, with responsibility for leading Medibank’s advocacy for health policy reform, developing Medibank’s funding strategy for $6bn in healthcare claims annually and Medibank’s payment integrity program that reduces healthcare fraud and waste and improves customer affordability.
Scott is the co-founder of Nexus Hospitals and was the Chief Operating Officer from 2013 – 2024, and has extensive experience in growing strong healthcare businesses. With a track record of achieving value for doctor shareholders, Scott is adept at developing healthy surgeon relationships and identifying opportunities for business improvement. During a broad healthcare career in profitable day hospitals and specialist group practices, Scott has worked with specialist surgeons to bring together top class teams and facilities and deliver outstanding patient care.
Scott has achieved landmark negotiations with private health insurers and suppliers, and has supported a number of specialist surgeons and day hospital operators on strategy and business development.
Prior to its merger with the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists, Scott was a Director of the Independent Ophthalmic Network. He remains involved in supporting and advocating for surgeons and day hospital operators alike.
Scott is also the NSW Member Director on the Board of Directors of Day Hospitals Australia.
Founder and Sole Director of Infection Prevention Australia, Michelle is a Registered Nurse who offers her clients over 20 years of Infection Control experience.
Having practiced in the public, private and aged care sector, Michelle is also consulted to private dialysis clinics and specialist day surgery centres.
A/Prof. Aaron Buckland is a spinal surgeon specializing in adult and paediatric spinal deformity, complex revision surgery, and minimally invasive spine surgery. He completed his MBBS/BMedSci at the University of Melbourne in 2005 and his Fellowship at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics) in 2014. He pursued a spinal surgery fellowship at NYU Hospital for Joint Disease in 2015 and worked at NYU Langone Health from 2015-2020, where he became Associate Professor and Director of Spine Research.
With over 160 peer-reviewed publications and more than 120 podium presentations at national and international meetings, A/Prof. Buckland has received numerous awards from the Spine Society of Australia, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Scoliosis Research Society, and others. He is a member of the Harms Study Group, AO Foundation Knowledge Forum, and Paediatric Spine Study Group.
He founded and chairs the Australian not-for-profit ‘Spine and Scoliosis Research Associates Australia’ (SSRAA), focusing on spinal and scoliosis surgery research and education. He developed the Paediatric Spine Registry at the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2022. A/Prof. Buckland operates at the Royal Children’s Hospital and in private practice at Melbourne Orthopaedic Group.
Dr David Canty is the Associate Professor and Academic Director of Ultrasound Simulation, University of Melbourne.

Simon started his career as a factory engineer and product design engineer, including for diagnostic and surgical devices. From here he transitioned into marketing and management, picking up commercial experience and qualifications. Following this he was employed to lead hospital development projects in some interesting locations outside Australia, and developed an interest in the commercial and operational aspects of hospitals and the healthcare system in general. Since 2015 he has consulted to a wide range of public, private and non-hospital healthcare providers.
Monique has over 25 years’ experience in the Australian healthcare industry in both public and private hospitals holding various senior and executive leadership positions.
Monique started her career as a nurse in the operating theatre where she quickly found her passion. She went on to complete post graduate studies in perioperative nursing and then later an MBA, bringing together her clinical expertise and business acumen.
Monique has held various senior positions in private day hospitals in Victoria. She is currently with the Victorian Department of Health’s regulatory compliance and operations branch, managing the Regulated Facilities team responsible for licensing and regulatory compliance of the private hospital and day hospital sectors in Victoria.
Cameron leads Nexus’ financial strategy, leveraging over two decades of experience in consulting, banking and healthcare to offer a transformative “outside-in” perspective.

Luke is an experienced senior executive and qualified lawyer with over 20 years’ experience in the Australian private health insurance (PHI) sector across a variety of roles including in commercial partnerships, counter fraud, managing payment integrity functions, corporate governance and company secretariat. Luke has post graduate qualification in investigations, holds a Master of Leadership, is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a qualified PROSCI Change Practitioner. He is currently the General Manager, Hospital & Medical Partnerships with Bupa and outside work, is a non-executive director on two charity boards supporting people living with disability
Jane Griffiths (BAppSc (Dist), MCNA, AIMM, RN) was appointed to the inaugural CEO position of Day Hospitals Australia on 1 July 2014. Previously she was the Day Hospitals Australia President from 2010 to 30 June 2014 and served on the Board of Directors and the former Management Committee of Day Hospitals Australia since 2008.
Prior to this, she was the Business Manager/DON of Perth Dermatology Clinic and conducted JG Consulting. Prior to that Jane was the Business Manager of The Women’s Clinic Day Hospital for 7½ years, McCourt Street Day Surgery for 7 years and Nursing Coordinator, Perioperative Services at St John of God Hospital Subiaco for 10 years. Whilst a Senior Nursing Executive at St John of God, Subiaco Jane was sent on 7-week sabbatical to the USA in 1997 to explore latest trends in same day surgery visiting California, Illinois, & Pennsylvania.
In 2021 Jane was appointed as one of the three Australian representatives on the International Association of Ambulatory Surgery (IAAS) General Assembly.
Jane is passionate about same day surgery and care.

For the last 15 years Dwight has worked in Risk Assessment, placement & client management in a multitude of underwriting and broking positions. Dwight’s professional focus is on risk interpretation and placement in medical and allied operations.
Dr Daniel Heredia
Group Executive Insurance and Health Services – HBF

Dr Daniel Heredia is a specialist medical administrator who works as the Group Executive – Insurance and Health Services at HBF Health. HBF is the fifth largest health insurer in Australia and includes the wholly owned Queensland Country Health Fund and see-u by HBF. Daniel is responsible for HBF’s insurance function and clinical services businesses including product design and monitoring, actuarial services, provider contracting, claims integrity, Queensland health fund operations (QCHF & See-U) and chronic disease management programs. Daniel also oversees HBF’s clinical businesses as the Managing Director of HBF Wellness, which includes HBF Dental and the Life Ready Health Group.
Before joining HBF, Daniel was the Deputy CEO and Medical Director at Hollywood Private Hospital, one of the largest private hospitals in Australia. He was also involved in leading the WA COVID-19 response as the Deputy Chief Executive COVID-19 Health Operations and has previously worked as a Medical Advisor to Medicare Australia.
Daniel is a Practitioner Member of the Medical Board of Australia. He has previously served as a Board Member of the WA Country Health Service (where he also chaired the Safety and Quality Board Subcommittee), as a Board Member of Private Healthcare Australia and was the immediate past Chair of the Western Australia Registration Committee of the Medical Board of Australia and practitioner member on the WA Board of the Medical Board of Australia. Daniel has also served as a Councillor with the Australian Medical Association (WA) and the Postgraduate Medical Council of WA, and as an Honorary Clinical Consultant with The University of Western Australia.
Brian Kelleher is the Assistant Secretary of the Private Health Industry Branch in the Department of Health. Other roles in the Department have included leading the Digital Health and Health and Aged Care Payments teams.
Prior to joining the Department in late 2016, Brian worked at the Department of Communications in a number of program and policy roles including spectrum and telecommunications policy.
Serena is an Assistant Director at the National Office of Cyber Security Engagement Team based in Western Australia within the Department of Home Affairs. Leveraging her 30 years in the Australian Public Service, Serena provides insight on 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy and the initiatives the Australian Government is focusing on to enable Australia to be a world leader in cyber security by 2030.
Matt has been involved in the hospital industry for over 25 years and is currently the CEO of PresMed Australia – a day hospital group with facilities across NSW, ACT and Tasmania. Matt is passionate about person-centered care and the use of values to drive the culture of an organisation. Promoting empathy to ensure the best experience for patients and staff. In 2019 he was one of the first Australians invited to speak at the worlds leading Patient Experience Summit held by Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Matt’s leadership and partnering with his team has been acknowledged in previous roles with his hospitals winning awards such as Outstanding Employer of Choice, Excellence in Innovation and Business of the Year. In 2019 Matt was NSW Business Leader of the Year by the NSW Business Chamber, and named an Outstanding Employee for Luye Medical, an organisation of more than 7,000 employees.
Matt started his career in health as a registered nurse working in Newcastle and the UK. On returning to Australia, Matt worked in Intensive Care Units across Sydney in both clinical and management roles, before moving into executive roles in the public and private sectors.
Fiona has worked in a range of roles over 25 years in the Australian healthcare system, including 12 years working as a hospital leader in a variety of settings including day surgery, mental health, and acute medical surgical hospitals.
In her role as Operations Director for the Southern Region with Nexus Hospitals, Fiona shares her wealth of operational and leadership experience to support her team through the challenges that all hospital leaders experience. Her commitment to excellence in patient care drives Fiona’s passion to continue innovating to introduce new models of care that benefit patients and the health system overall.
Grant Lockwood is Virtus Health’s Chief Information Security Officer. His 20-plus year IT & security career has taken him full-stack from the server room to the boardroom across education, managed services, high performance sports and healthcare. He shares his experience at the pointy end of healthcare cybersecurity with a range of organisations, helping them to improve their resiliency and cyber confidence. His hobbies include writing, music production, and typing Invoke-Mimikatz.ps1 into every freetext webform he can find.
As the Commonwealth Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Alison provides high-level strategic policy advice to the Australian Government and the Executive and staff within the Department of Health and Aged care on nursing, midwifery, health system reform, health workforce, regulation and education.
Alison has been a Registered Nurse for more than 40 years, she has a Critical Care Nursing Certificate, a Bachelor Degree in Education, and a Master of Business Administration. Alison has held senior executive roles in government and health services within Victoria including the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Director of Quality, Safety and Patient Experience and Director of Health Emergency Management.
She has received a number of awards including a Distinguished Alumni Award from Latrobe University in 2024, a Public Service Medal in June 2021 for outstanding public service to driving the Government’s national health response priorities during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly to infection prevention measures, a National Emergency Medal in recognition of service following the 2009 Victorian Bushfires and, in 2021, a Humanitarian Overseas Medal.
Carina is passionate about embracing research, entrepreneurship, innovation, and intervention, which is central to her drive to prevent organisational disruption, increase stakeholder value, and deliver quality healthcare to patients.
Carina has over 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, the majority in senior or executive roles, and has worked in various specialist areas, including operating theatres, day hospitals and intensive care.
Carina’s initial entrepreneurial leap of faith in 1995 saw a startup business with the company value ‘to make a difference’ grow into a successful ophthalmic mobile surgical unit. Since 2013, she has held the position of Director of Clinical Services at Vista Day Surgery in Adelaide, where innovation and intervention have continued.
In 2023, Carina introduced the Ophthalmic theatre nurse upskill training program, which aims to engage novice nurses with no previous operating theatre experience and provides a framework for disseminating and implementing a structured skill training intervention that underpins outcomes such as increased staff skill mix, engagement and retention, increased quality healthcare delivery, and decreased organisational and clinical risk.
Engaging all aspects of the organisation, its people, stakeholders and partnerships to drive change, Carina believes that the ‘hands-on’ approach underpins the ability to understand what energies are the driving factors behind successful outcomes.
In 2022 Carina was appointed Day Hospital Australia SA/NT Chapter Chair.
Dr Leena Nagappan is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for the Perioperative Medicine Services at Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Groups. Having completed her Masters in Perioperative Medicine in 2018, she chairs the POM Network in WA and is passionate about promoting the subspecialty across the state. She represents WA in the ANZCA Day Surgery Anaesthesia Executive Committee. Outside of her clinical commitments, she is a busy mother of two daughters, a martial arts enthusiast and enjoys all forms of music except jazz.
John is a Gastroenterologist and Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at the University of Sydney. John works both in the public and private sectors of medicine.
John is the founder and past owner of Pennant Hills Day Surgery in NSW.
He has been a committee member of the Day Hospitals Australia since 2006 and currently is the Chairman of the NSW Chapter of the Day Hospitals Australia. In May 2015, John also took on the role of Australian representative, on The International Association of Ambulatory Surgery (IAAS) General Assembly.
Glen Power is chief executive officer of the Lions Eye Institute. Glen has spent the past 24 years in senior management roles in both the public and private health sectors, including 18 years as CEO or General Manager of several hospitals around Australia.
He also served for three years as chief of staff and principal policy advisor to the Minister for Health in Western Australia. Glen is a Rhodes Scholar and studied the sciences and law at Oxford, Melbourne, UWA and Murdoch universities.
Alongside work and career, he has served as non-executive director of several medical research institutes and educational charities and is currently the Western Australian representative on the board of the trustee of the Rhodes Scholarships in Australia. He has two sons who he loves spending time with in the southern forests, and he has just completed a book on trout in Western Australia.
Gail is an academic and nurse researcher within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Notre Dame Fremantle. She was the inaugural winner of the Reginald ‘Babe’ Norman PhD scholarship awarded to an applicant who demonstrates high academic ability and original targeted research which addresses significant health issues. In addition, Gail is Board Chair of Fremantle Women’s Health Centre, a not-for profit which provides medical, nursing and counselling services for women and a non-executive director of Amana Living one of Western Australia’s largest not-for-profit providers of care and services for older people.
Cheryle Royle is an experienced hospital CEO with a passion for quality in healthcare and clinical governance. Having started her career a registered Nurse & Midwife, Cheryle progressed to her first role as CEO of a hospital within Australian Hospital Care (AHC) in 1995. Since then, she has managed a number of hospitals in both Victoria and Queensland, retiring from her role as CEO St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane in 2017.
Cheryle was awarded a Telstra Businesswomen’s Award in Victoria (1998) and is currently a Judge for Testra in their Best of Business Awards. She is also a current member of the Australasian Institute of Clinical Governance (AICG) where her desire to drive clinical improvement continues.
She served on the Australian Commission for Safety & Quality for several years until her retirement and has been a Surveyor with the Australian Council for Healthcare Standards in the past. Throughout her career, Cheryle focussed her management skills on the clinical arena where she believes the greatest opportunity for improvement in not only clinical care but in overall business improvement.
Over her career, Cheryle has served on a number of Boards across both the public and private sectors and continues to do so.
Richard has over 30 years of senior executive experience in the public, for profit and not for profit private hospital sectors in Australia, plus experience as a senior executive with one of the major Australian private health insurers. He also spent time as PwC’s lead partner for digital health in Australia and SE Asia.
He is a past President of the Australian Private Hospitals Association, and past deputy Chair of the HESTA superannuation fund.
Richard oversaw the successful implementation of Australia’s first fully integrated digital hospital in Hervey Bay, as group CEO of UnitingCare Health in 2014. In 2016, he was asked to be the startup CEO of the newly established Australian Digital Health Agency – putting into practice one of his recommendations from a landmark review he was asked to lead in 2013 for the Federal Government on digital health in Australia.
He currently chairs the CSIRO’s eHealth Research Centre, which has a national footprint and has successfully commercialized a number of innovative digital health initiatives.
Dr Ernest Tan graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1990. He trained in dermatology at all the major teaching hospitals in Perth and has been a fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists since 1998. His is also a Mohs Surgery Specialist and Chair of the Mohs Surgery Committee of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.
He is a Consultant Dermatologist of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and is in private practice at Burswood Dermatology. He is a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Western of Australia, panel member of the Western Australian Kirkbride Melanoma Advisory Service (WAKMAS) and is the current lead clinician for Skin Tumours for the Western Australia Cancer and Palliative Care Network.
Dr Tan has been actively involved in multiple clinical trials in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, skin cancers, and solar keratoses. He has published multiple articles in peer reviewed Dermatology journals and provides advice for multiple Dermatology Advisory Boards. He was a previous director and part owner of Southbank Day Surgery until this was acquired by Nexus Hospitals in 2016. He continues to perform Mohs Surgery and Skin Cancer Surgery at Southbank Day Surgery.
Dr Edward Van Beem M.B.B.S.(W.A.) F.R.C.S. (Ed) F.R.A.C.S. (Plastics) is a fully qualified plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
Dr Van Beem was born and educated in Perth, studying at the University of Western Australia and graduating medicine in 1982. After internship and residency at Royal Perth Hospital he undertook specialist training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Royal Perth Hospital which included time at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. In 1989 he worked at St Thomas’s Hospital in London as a lecturer with the University of London and in 1990 undertook a further fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Oxford, United Kingdom. Dr Van Beem received his final qualifications in plastic surgery in 1990 and after a year as a specialist in London, returned to Perth at the end of 1991.
Dr Van Beem is now in full time private practice as a specialist plastic surgeon at the Mount Hospital and Cambridge Day Surgery. Dr Van Beem’s practice encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Dr Van Beem has been performing surgery now for twenty years in Perth and has a wide range of experience with different clinical situations, including patients requiring remedial surgery after poor experiences elsewhere.
