Michael Johnson gained his fellowship of the Australasian College of Surgeons in 1986.
Between 1986-1989, he obtained further training in spinal surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and The Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in London, UK. In addition, he completed further fellowships in Germany and the United States.
After returning to Melbourne in 1989, he limited his practice to spinal surgery working both in private practice. At different times, he has had public appointments at St Vincent’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, Peter MacCallum Clinic and The Royal Children’s Hospital.
Most recently he has been working at Epworth Hospital.
In addition, he is involved in a number of professional organizations. At present he is a member of the Federal Board of the AOA and is AOA Vice-President. He was on the Executive of the Spine Society of Australia and was SSA President between 2018 and 2020. Also, he is Principal Investigator and Steering Committee Chair of the Australian Spine Registry.
