Dr Ian Irving is Icon Group’s Chief Medical Officer and serves as a Director of Icon Group. In addition, he works clinically as a Haematologist at Icon Cancer Centre Wesley and Icon Cancer Centre Mackay. His clinical practice covers a broad range of haematological disorders with expertise in bone marrow transplantation (autologous and allogeneic), multiple myeloma and myeloproliferative neoplasms. He also has extensive medical leadership experience and continues as an examiner on the RACP national examination panel as well as a board member of the Private Cancer Physicians Association, with which he has been involved in various campaigns around the funding of private cancer care.
Dr Irving graduated from the University of Queensland in 1991. His years as a junior doctor included time in Townsville and Perth prior to the completion of his advanced training in clinical and laboratory haematology at Royal Brisbane Hospital in 2000. He has worked as a Consultant Haematologist at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Sullivan and Nicolaides pathology, St James Hospital (Dublin), National Maternity Hospital (Dublin), and PathCentre (WA). From 2003 – 2017 he was Director of Haematology at The Townsville Hospital where he was also Clinical Director of Cancer Services.
He has sat on national and international committees and advisory boards, has completed post-graduate management qualifications including AFRACMA and GAICD, has mentored numerous trainees to consultant practice and has experience and knowledge of public and private health care.
